Aguero career cut short by heart problem

Sergio Aguero, one of the greatest footballers of our time, has announced the end of his sporting career. The reason was health problems. For a long time the Argentine has been admired for his dribbling, assertiveness and striking flair for goal. Sergio fans will always remember his combative nature.

What happened to Aguero?

On 30 October, it was an ordinary match in the Spanish La Liga against Barcelona against Alaves. At the end of the first half, the Argentine’s breathing became laboured and he slumped to the pitch without power, and the Blue Granatay doctors led the striker off the pitch to the changing room a minute later. An initial medical examination revealed nothing serious. However, a professional examination revealed more than tachycardia (the official diagnosis). Doctors have forbidden Sergio to continue his professional career otherwise Aguero may repeat the Erickson story.

Fans’ opinion

For English Premier League fans, the Argentine will be remembered primarily as a Manchester City player. With this team he won all possible club trophies, but fans still believe that Aguero came to the Citizens because of money. The Sheikhs lured one of their most promising strikers with a fabulous amount of zeros.

There was another Argentine in the Man City squad – Carlos Tevez. It would seem that he should have attracted the lion’s share of the hype after leaving Manchester United for a considerable amount of money. Unlike Tevez, Aguero has steadily scored in packs against rivals, and in a meeting with the Mancunians in the 2011-2012 season he completed the rout of the local side at Old Trafford. Recall that United lost 1-6, with Sergio scoring the final goal in the 93rd minute.

Sergio Agüero's weak heart has forced the footballer to quit the sport

As a result, Aguero became the epicentre of hatred for United fans for a long time. They booed his every touch of the ball, composed hurtful shouts and made obscene gestures. You have to hand it to the Argentine – he did not break under immense pressure. City’s victories, including those after Guardiola’s arrival, are largely to his credit. Sergio is remembered fondly by the Citizens’ fans, even after his move to Barcelona.

Aguero greatness

The Argentine forward joined Manchester City in 2011. Despite increased funding, the Citizens have fallen on hard times. There have been various players (Robinho, Jo, Santa Cruz and Balotelli) at the striker’s position but they have not produced a consistent performance. Aguero made a loud statement in his debut game against Swansea. He came on as a substitute in the second half and scored a double and an assist. In that season, Sergio “mastered” 23 goals.

Two years later, Aguero was firmly entrenched in Manchester City’s starting line-up. During his 8 seasons with the Citizens, the Argentine has single-handedly pulled matches off, scoring unbelievable goals. Aguero shattered stereotypes about South Americans. It was believed that they do not suit the tough APL, and low forwards (Sergio’s height is only 173 cm) “eaten” by tall English defenders.

Despite the Argentine’s recognition, there is a sense that he is undervalued. In 2019, for example, the BBC published a list of the best transfers in the history of the APL. Thierry Henry came in first place, with Cristiano Ronaldo in second and Eric Contona in third. Aguero surpassed the listed players by many measures, including the number of goals and trophies in the league. But his greatness is stubbornly ignored by the experts.

Sergio Aguero ended his football career in the autumn of 2021 due to heart problems. There are many ways of looking at the Argentine but it is an undeniable fact that he was one of the greatest strikers of the 2010s.
