Folkrace – rally

Do you like it fast? Then you probably like cars and folk racing. Admittedly, the maximum speed limit in folk racing is only 80 km/h, but as there is a lot of terrain and bends, you have to keep your tongue firmly in your cheek – at least for the driver. And precisely because folk racing is a highly eventful motor sport, spectators find it exciting and rewarding to watch.

The basic rules of folk racing are that the race track must be in a fenced area. In addition, a track inspector must approve the track before a folkrace can take place. Another basic rule and tradition is that all cars are for sale for 6500 kr after the end of the race. As far as fees for participating in a race are concerned, these may not exceed 300 kr for seniors and 200 kr for juniors. Already in the year when you turn 15 you can start competing in the junior class. However, it is a requirement that a debutant competition be held if you do not have a driving licence. Anyone who is 18 years of age or older has the opportunity to compete in the senior class.

It is not uncommon to see drivers driving folk races in a converted Volvo 240. It usually goes by at a furious pace. The Volvo 240 is a hard-wearing car with a robust body. Despite this, folk racing cars sometimes need repairs, brakes need replacing, the car’s engine needs overhauling, yes there are often things that need fixing to keep it running! This means that the car is excellent for folk racing. Volvo cars generally tend to have good grip, which is great considering that folk racing is very often done on gravel tracks. A Volvo engine also tends to be relatively easy to tune.

The cars used in folk racing must be equipped with a safety cage, safety seats and a four-point seat belt. Before each race, the cars must be inspected by an expert to ensure that they meet the safety requirements laid down in the regulations. In addition, there are high requirements for the driver’s equipment. Flameproof overalls, sturdy shoes, gloves, a protective hood and a helmet approved for folk racing. Among other things, the helmet must not weigh more than 1200 grams.
